KENT COUNTY, MI - Democrat Nancy Morales was elected to an open seat on the Kent County Board of Commissioners in the Nov. 5 general election, representing District 20.
The district includes part of the city of Grand Rapids, southwest Grand Rapids and the northern part of the city of Wyoming.
Morales, an artist, defeated Republican Derek Anderson. She won with 5,444 votes (65.89%) to Derek Anderson’s 2,753 votes (33.32%), according to unofficial results from the Kent County Clerk’s Office.
Morales described herself as a “community-facing” candidate with work experience teaching art classes, working at a local library, managing a community garden and farmers market and working as a climate justice advocate, on her campaign website.

The seat is open because Democrat Ivan Diaz, who was elected to the board in 2022, decided to not seek reelection so he could run for the Michigan Senate’s
